Grecian wonder band Baby Guru touches Velvet Underground’s flower pop opus ”Candy Says” and the result is rather magnificent. I loved the David Bowie, Space Oddity era, touch they gave where it elevates this cover in a truly and madly captivating experience.
Baby Guru are in the works for their second album which will be out sometime this year. In the meantime you can download their cover on ”Candy Says” over at the web culture magazine Ough!.

Baby Guru: Yogi Sister EP (vol.1) - free download here
Yogi Sister EP (vol.1) is the first installment in a series of experimental-primitive recordings that will be given to the public for free. It is Baby Guru’s tribute to the lo-fi sound of an old cassette that marked their childhood years. The basic tracks were recorded live, using only one microphone in the middle of the room and then the band added horns, baglamas, samples (played in real time), fender rhodes etc. Nothing was rehearsed - it started out as a jam and the whole thing was finished a few hours later.
Influences for this EP: the minimal grooves of Neu!, Can’s Tago Mago, the psychedelic sounds of Broadcast, Ariel Pink’s first recordings, the last two LPs from the Doors and Blend aka Mishkin’s Sudden Death.

Baby Guru: Yogi Sister EP (vol.2) - free download here
Yogi Sister EP (vol.2) is the second installment in a series of experimental-primitive recordings and its vibe reflects on the band’s state of uncertainty and anger for a period of time.
- All the tracks are products of free improvisation.
- Guitars make their first appearance.
- The band members switched roles on many occasions.
- “Sister Ray Approximately” started as an attempt at covering Velvet Underground’s Sister Ray, but the whole thing evolved into a different kind of (bad) trip.
